Alexander Manevitz, Ph.D.

HISTORIAN AND EDUCATOR OF RACE, URBAN SPACE, AND CAPITALISM
IN THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY UNITED STATES

About Me

I am scholar, public historian, and educator currently teaching at an independent secondary school.

Previously, I was
a Bernard and Irene Schwartz Postdoctoral Fellow at the New-York Historical Society and The Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at the New School. For three years before that, I was a Visiting Assistant Professor of American Studies at Trinity College, where I taught courses for both undergraduate and graduate students.

I received my Ph.D. in U.S. History from New York University in 2016, with additional support as a pre-doctoral fellow from the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Recent News

I have signed a book contract with Cornell University Press for The Rise and Fall of Seneca Village. I am excited to partner with them and bring the only book entirely dedicated to the history and memory of Seneca Village to the public.

You can also find my recent scholarly article, "'A Great Injustice': Urban Capitalism and the Limits of Freedom in Nineteenth-Century New York City," in the Journal of Urban History.
